Bhisho

Bhisho, also known as Bisho, is the capital city of the Eastern Cape province in South Africa. It is an important city for government work. The Office of the Premier and the Provincial Legislature are there, along with many other government offices.

The city is very close to a place called Qonce, only three kilometres away. It is also about 70 kilometres from a larger city named East London. Bhisho is part of a bigger area called Buffalo City, which includes several towns and cities nearby.

History

Bhisho gets its name from the Xhosa word for buffalo. This name also comes from the nearby Buffalo River. The town was named after a song by Ben Tyazashe. He wrote about missing his home called Bisho, which refers to King William's Town. Some believe the name was created by Ciskei leader Lennox Sebe.

When the area known as Ciskei was given independence in 1981 (though not recognized outside South Africa), Bisho became its capital. During this time, the town grew quickly. In 1983, Bisho formed a partnership with a place in the West Bank. This led to new buildings and businesses.

After South Africa's first democratic elections in 1994, Bisho became part of the country again. Later that year, it was chosen as the capital of the Eastern Cape because of its good roads and space for growth. In 2004, the government changed the spelling from Bisho to Bhisho.

Bhisho today

Bhisho has many important buildings, like government offices for the Eastern Cape, a hospital, a stadium, and a radio station. It also has a branch of the University of Fort Hare. Many people in Bhisho work for the government. The town depends on nearby Qonce and East London for many things.

Climate

Bhisho has cool semi-arid weather. This means it is usually dry with mild temperatures. The climate is also close to a hot semi-arid climate and a humid subtropical climate. In a humid subtropical climate, summers are warm and winters are mild.

Notable people

Bhisho is the hometown of some talented individuals. Ma Nala, born in 1994, is a singer and songwriter. Masande Ntshanga, born in 1986, is known for his work as a novelist.
