The McDonnell Douglas/Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is a large military transport aircraft for the United States Air Force. It was made in the 1980s and 1990s by McDonnell Douglas. The name comes from older planes, the Douglas C-74 Globemaster and the Douglas C-124 Globemaster II.

The C-17 is based on the YC-15, a smaller test plane. It was built to replace the Lockheed C-141 Starlifter and help with jobs done by the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy. The new design is bigger, with swept wings and strong engines. The first C-17 flew on September 15, 1991, and joined the U.S. Air Force on January 17, 1995. After Boeing joined with McDonnell Douglas in 1997, they kept making the C-17 for over twenty years. The last one was finished in Long Beach, California, in November 2015.

The C-17 is used to move soldiers and cargo around the world, for both quick and far missions. It can also help with medical evacuation and dropping supplies from the air (airdrop). Countries that use the C-17 include the United States, India, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and European nations called the Heavy Airlift Wing.

This airplane was important during big operations like Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. It also helped bring humanitarian aid after natural disasters, such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the 2011 Sindh floods, and the 2023 Turkey–Syria earthquakes.

Development

Background and design phase

The McDonnell Douglas YC-15 design was used as the basis for the C-17.

In the 1970s, the U.S. Air Force needed a new airplane to carry supplies. They asked two companies to make plans for this airplane. One company made a smaller airplane called the YC-15. Later, the Air Force wanted a bigger airplane, so they asked McDonnell Douglas to make a larger version based on the YC-15. This new airplane was called the C-17. It was designed to do jobs that older airplanes, like the C-141 and C-5, could not do as well.

Development difficulties

When they were building the C-17, there were some problems. One test showed that part of the airplane was not strong enough, so they had to fix it. There were also problems with the cost and timing of the project. Even with these issues, the C-17 was finally completed and started being used by the Air Force in 1995.

Production and deliveries

After the C-17 was made, more were built for the Air Force. Over time, the number of airplanes ordered changed. By 2013, the Air Force had received all 223 C-17s they planned to have. The factory that made the C-17 closed in 2015, but some parts were still being made for a few more years.

In 2025, there were talks about making more C-17s because some countries were interested in buying them. The U.S. Air Force is also thinking about getting new airplanes to replace the C-17 and C-5 in the future.

Replacement plans

The U.S. Air Force wants to get new airplanes to replace the C-17 and C-5. They call this plan the Next-Generation Airlifter. They hope to start getting these new airplanes around 2038. The new airplanes need to be faster and able to work in places where there are more threats from other countries. Right now, the C-17 and C-5 are expected to keep flying until around 2075 and 2045.

Cockpit of a C-17

The C-17 Globemaster III is a large military plane used to carry heavy supplies and equipment close to where they are needed. It is very big, measuring 174 feet long with a wingspan of nearly 170 feet. It uses special engines that can push air upward to protect the plane and help it move backward on the ground.

The C-17 can carry a lot of cargo, including big vehicles like tanks, through a large back ramp. It can fly long distances and land on short or rough runways, making it very useful for different kinds of missions. The plane needs only three people to fly: a pilot, a copilot, and someone to manage the cargo.

Operational history

United States Air Force

The first C-17 arrived at Charleston Air Force Base in South Carolina in 1993. It became ready for missions in 1995. This airplane broke 22 records for carrying heavy loads. In 1994, it won a top U.S. aviation award called the Collier Trophy. The C-17 flew in important places like Kosovo and Operation Allied Force. It could use smaller airfields and turn around quickly.

C-17s delivered supplies during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq. They also brought aid after the 2010 Haiti earthquake and the 2011 Sindh floods, carrying food, medicine, and emergency supplies. In 2003, 15 C-17s dropped 1,000 soldiers over Iraq at night. These drops were followed by C-17s carrying heavy vehicles. C-17s have helped allies with airlift needs, such as moving Canadian vehicles to Afghanistan in 2003 and supporting Australian forces in East Timor in 2006. In 2006, C-17s flew Canadian tanks from Kyrgyzstan to Kandahar for a NATO mission in Afghanistan. In 2013, five C-17s helped France in Mali, working with other countries’ C-17s.

Flight crews call the C-17 “the Moose” because when it refuels on the ground, the pressure relief vents make a sound like a moose calling.

Since 1999, C-17s have flown yearly to Antarctica as part of Operation Deep Freeze, supporting research programs. The first flight was by the 62nd Airlift Wing. C-17s fly between Christchurch Airport and McMurdo Station, a trip that takes about five hours each way. In 2006, a C-17 made its first airdrop in Antarctica, delivering 70,000 pounds of supplies. More airdrops happened in later years.

A C-17 sometimes travels with the President of the United States for visits, consultations, and meetings. It carries the President’s car, Marine One, and security teams. On some occasions, the President has flown on a C-17, using the call sign Air Force One.

In 2015, during a missile test at Wake Island, C-17s launched simulated missiles against defense systems. In early 2020, tests showed that C-17s could carry special platforms with weapons. In 2021, further tests developed the Rapid Dragon system, turning the C-17 into a cruise missile launcher capable of carrying 45 missiles from far away.

In August 2021, during the evacuation from Afghanistan, a C-17 took off from Kabul with people holding on to the outside. Sadly, some people fell off and others were hurt. That same day, another C-17 carried 823 people from Kabul, setting a new record for the airplane.

Royal Air Force

In January 2013, the Royal Air Force sent two C-17s to France, carrying vehicles to Mali. In June 2015, an RAF C-17 helped medical evacuation after attacks in Tunisia. In September 2022, a C-17 carried the body of Queen Elizabeth II from Edinburgh to London after her death.

Royal Canadian Air Force

Canada needed big airplanes for moving military and aid supplies around the world. They used rented planes for many years. In 2010, a Canadian C-17 landed at the northernmost airport in the world. Canadian C-17s have helped in many missions, including after the 2010 Haiti earthquake and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines in 2013. In 2014, they supported military operations in different places.

Strategic Airlift Capability program

In 2006, some NATO countries agreed to buy and share several C-17s. The planes were delivered in 2009. These C-17s are based in Hungary and are used by many NATO members. The planes have been very ready for missions and have flown over 1,000 missions.

Indian Air Force

The C-17 gives the Indian Air Force the ability to move big loads, support special forces, and operate in many different terrains. The first C-17 was delivered in January 2013 and entered service in June 2013. The Indian Air Force now has 11 C-17s. They fly to high-altitude bases in India and have supported missions in places like Tajikistan, Rwanda, and during Cyclone Phailin. In February 2023, a C-17 carried aid to victims of an earthquake in Turkey and Syria, avoiding Pakistan’s airspace. In March 2024, an IAF C-17 helped rescue sailors from a hijacked ship off the coast of Somalia by dropping commandos who boarded the ship and freed the sailors.

Qatar

Qatar received its first C-17 in August 2009 and has since received four more. In 2015, Qatar agreed to buy four more C-17s. One Qatari C-17 sometimes wears markings of Qatar Airways to show Qatar’s role in global operations.

Variants

The C-17 has several versions. The C-17A is the main military version. Some C-17As have extra fuel in a center wing tank, called the "ER" version. These planes were made starting in 2001.

There are also upgrade versions like Block 16 and Block 21, which improve systems and add new features such as better communication tools. Boeing also suggested other versions like the C-17B for shorter runways and the KC-17 as a tanker plane, but these were only ideas and not built. Another idea was the MD-17 for airline use, later called the BC-17X.
