British Academy Film Awards

The British Academy Film Awards, often called the BAFTAs, are an annual event to celebrate the best in British and international films. They are hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). The first BAFTA ceremony took place in 1949 and has since become a major honor in the world of cinema.

These awards are very important in the film industry, similar to other famous awards like the Academy Awards. Winners receive a special statue that looks like a theatrical mask. Over the years, the ceremony has been held in many famous places in London, including the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square Cinema, the Royal Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Royal Festival Hall.

The BAFTA Awards were first shown on television in 1955 on the BBC, with actress Vivien Leigh as the host. Today, the event usually happens in February and has been sponsored by EE since 2013.

History

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, called BAFTA, began in 1947 by famous filmmakers like David Lean and Laurence Olivier. It grew by joining with television groups and became BAFTA in 1976.

BAFTA wants to support and celebrate great films and television. They have big award shows and many learning events all year. Their special award mask was made by artist Mitzi Cunliffe. Over time, members of the royal family, like Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Princess Anne, have helped with the ceremonies.

Annual ceremony

The British Academy Film Awards, also called the BAFTAs, happen once a year in February. This is before the Academy Awards. Most awards can go to filmmakers from any country, but some special awards are just for people from the United Kingdom, like Outstanding British Film.

During each ceremony, there is a special moment to honor people in the film industry who have passed away in the past year. This includes showing pictures with music.

William, Prince of Wales started attending these ceremonies in 2010 after becoming president of BAFTA. He has been there many times since, sometimes with Catherine, Princess of Wales. He gave special awards to Mel Brooks in 2017 and Kathleen Kennedy in 2020.

Broadcast

In the past, the BAFTA Awards were shown on British TV with a delay and later around the world. The first time it was shown was on the BBC in 1956, hosted by Vivien Leigh. The show has been in color since 1970. In the United States, it used to be shown on BBC America with a delay until 2021. After that, it moved to the streaming service BritBox. In 2023, there was a live broadcast for the main awards at the end of the ceremony.

Location

The ceremony always happens in London. From 2000 to 2007, it was at the big Odeon cinema in Leicester Square. From 2008 to 2016, it moved to the Royal Opera House. Starting in 2017 and going through 2022, the ceremonies were at the Royal Albert Hall.

For the 76th British Academy Film Awards in 2023, the ceremony moved to the Royal Festival Hall. This change was part of a new agreement between BAFTA and the Southbank Centre, so the Film Awards would be in the same place as the British Academy Television Awards and British Academy Games Awards.

Sponsorship

Before 2012, a mobile phone company called Orange helped support the awards. Starting in 2013, EE, which is Orange’s parent company, took over as the sponsor.

Award categories

The British Academy Film Awards, also called the BAFTAs, have many different categories to celebrate great movies. Some of the main awards include Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Film Not in the English Language, and Best Documentary. There are also awards for animated films, family films, short films, and more. Actors and actresses are recognized for both leading and supporting roles, and there are awards for directing, writing, and many other parts of making a film.

Some older awards that are no longer given out include Best British Actor, Best Foreign Actor, and Best Original Song. Special awards, like the BAFTA Fellowship, are also given for outstanding contributions to cinema.

Notes

• Michael Caine was the first actor to receive two nominations in the same category in a single year.
• The only ceremony with multiple actors nominated twice in the same category was the 57th, with Sean Penn and Scarlett Johansson. Penn did not win either nomination, while Johansson also did not win, and her performances were not nominated for the corresponding Oscar.
• Kate Winslet is the only actor to be nominated twice in this way more than once.

• Albert Finney was the first actor to be nominated for two awards for one performance.
• Jodie Foster was the first actor to win both nominations.
• Brad Davis is the only actor to not win either nomination.
• The only ceremony with multiple actors nominated for two awards for one performance was the 37th, with Phyllis Logan and Julie Walters. Logan and Walters were nominated against each other, and both won, splitting the categories.
