The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies (Romanian: Academia de Studii Economice din București, abbreviated ASE) is a public university in Bucharest, Romania. It was started in 1913 as the Academy of Higher-level Commercial and Industrial Studies (Academia de Înalte Studii Comerciale și Industriale (AISCI)).

Over time, it has become one of the biggest places to learn about economics in Romania and South-Eastern Europe.

Today, the Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies is known as a university for research and learning. It is recognized by the Ministry of Education for its work in teaching and finding new knowledge. ASE is also part of the Universitaria Consortium, a group of top universities in Romania. This makes it a very important school for students who want to study economics and related subjects.

History

The Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies started on April 6, 1913, after a royal decree from Carol I of Romania. It was Romania's first school to teach about business and money.

Over the years, the school changed its name several times. In 1947, it joined with another school. In 1948, it became part of a larger group of schools. By 1968, it was called the Bucharest University of Economic Studies, and that is still its name today.

Format and length of studies

In the 1970s and 1980s, students could earn a master's degree in economics after four years of study. One department, called 'Cibernetics and Informatics,' needed an extra year.

Inside the building

After 1990, students could earn a Bachelor's degree in Economics after finishing their studies. Until 2005, students spent four years studying (five years for the 'Cibernetics and Informatics' department). After that, they could spend two more years to earn a Master's degree, and three years for a PhD.

Since 2005, the university follows a new system. Now, students earn a Bachelor's degree after three years, then spend two more years to earn a Master's degree. The PhD still takes at least three years.
