Description
Castorocauda was an early mammal that looked like an otter. It lived about 160 million years ago during the Jurassic period in what is now Inner Mongolia, China. It was part of a group called the Yanliao Biota, found in the Daohugou Beds.
Size and Features
Weighing between 500 and 800 grams, Castorocauda was a big early mammal for its time. It was the first early mammal known to have features for living in water, like a fur pelt. It could also dig well, and its teeth looked like those of modern seals and ancient whales. This means it probably acted like river otters and the platypus, eating mainly fish. Castorocauda lived in a cool, wet place with other interesting animals such as salamanders, pterosaurs, birdlike dinosaurs, and other early mammals.
Discovery and etymology
The main part of the Castorocauda was found in the Daohugou Beds in the Jiulongshan Formation in Inner Mongolia, China. This spot is from about 159 to 164 million years ago during the Middle to Late Jurassic time. Scientists found some of its skeleton, like parts of its skull, lower jaw, ribs, limbs, pelvis, and tail. Even some soft parts and hair were kept safe.
The name Castorocauda comes from the Latin words Castor, meaning "beaver", and cauda, meaning "tail". This is because it likely had a tail like a beaver. The species name lutrasimilis also comes from Latin, with lutra meaning "otter" and similis meaning "similar". This is because some of its teeth and vertebrae look like those of modern otters.
Description
Castorocauda was a large, ancient mammal that lived in water and on land. It looked a bit like an otter. Scientists think it was bigger than what fossils show, maybe weighing between half a kilogram and almost a kilogram.
This animal had special teeth that curved backward to help it catch fish, much like modern seals. Its arms were built for swimming, similar to a platypus, and it likely had webbed feet and claws. It also had a flat tail, like beavers and otters, which it may have used for moving through water. The fur found on Castorocauda is the oldest known fur, showing that fur was an important feature of early mammals.
Taxonomy
Castorocauda belonged to a group called Docodonta. These were extinct creatures that looked like mammals but were not true mammals. When scientists found Castorocauda in 2006, they first thought it was related to animals from Europe. Later, they learned it might be closest to another animal called Dsungarodon, which lived in China and probably ate plants and soft animals.
Finding Castorocauda showed scientists that mammals were not just small land animals as once thought. During the Middle Jurassic period, many kinds of mammal-like creatures were evolving and moving into different places. This change might have happened because an old supercontinent called Pangaea broke apart, creating new homes, or because these creatures were slowly developing new traits.
Paleoecology
Castorocauda is the earliest known aquatic mammaliaform. It shows that mammals started living in water over 100 million years earlier than scientists thought. Its teeth were good for holding onto slippery animals, and its body looked like modern animals such as the platypus and river otters. It probably swam well and ate fish.
The area where Castorocauda was found had many different kinds of animals. These included salamanders, pterosaurs, insects, and other early mammals. The plants there suggest a cool, wet climate with clear differences between wet and dry seasons.
