Chenango, New York

Chenango is a town in Broome County, New York, United States. It is located northeast of Binghamton, a larger nearby city.

History
The area of Chenango, New York was first settled around 1787. The Town of Chenango was created in 1791, before Broome County was formed. It was one of the first towns in the county, and many other towns came from it later.
Geography
The town of Chenango covers an area of 34.3 square miles. Most of it is land, with a little bit of water. The Chenango River runs along the eastern edge of the town. Major roads such as Interstate 81, U.S. Route 11, and New York State Route 12 go through Chenango.
Demographics
In the year 2000, 11,454 people lived in Chenango. Most people, about 97%, were White. Smaller groups included African American, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander people, as well as those from other races or from two or more races. About 1% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
Many families lived in the town. About one-third of households had children under 18. Most households were married couples living together. The average family had nearly three people. People of all ages lived there, with many in their 40s and 50s. The average income for a family was around $54,000, but some families lived below the poverty line.

Subdivisions
Chenango, New York, has several small communities called hamlets. These include Castle Creek, Chenango Bridge, Chenango Forks, Glen Castle, Hinman's Corners, Kattelville, Newmans Corners, Nimmonsburg, and West Chenango. Each of these places is a small group of homes and shops. They are connected by roads and exits from big highways like Interstate 81 and Interstate 88.
