City Hall Park is a public park in the middle of Manhattan, New York. It is right next to New York City Hall in an area named the Civic Center. This park has a long history and was once the main green space for the early city of New York. It is a quiet place in the busy city where people can relax and enjoy being outside. The park is surrounded by important government buildings, making it a special place in the city.

History

17th century

David Provoost came to New Netherland as early as 1638. He held important jobs and helped govern New Amsterdam. He owned land where City Hall Park is today.

City Hall Park

18th century

Long before the United States became a country, City Hall Park was a place where people gathered for important events. In 1765, people protested against unfair taxes there. In 1766, a tall pole with the word “liberty” on it was put up, but British soldiers took it down.

In 1776, American soldiers and citizens met in the park to hear the important document that announced America’s independence. Later, General George Washington raised the American flag in the park.

19th century

In 1802, New York City decided to build a new City Hall because the old one was too small. The new building was finished in 1812.

In 1827, slavery ended in New York, and people celebrated in the park.

In 1842, a fountain was placed in the park to honor the new water system that brought clean water to the city.
