Coalbrookdale Formation

The Coalbrookdale Formation is a very important place for scientists who study very old life on Earth. It is a fossil-rich area found in Powys and Herefordshire, close to the border between England and Wales. These fossils come from about 430 million years ago, during a time called the Silurian Period. What makes this place special is that the fossils are often very well preserved.

The area was first described by a scientist named Roderick Murchison in 1935. He gave the name “Silurian” after the Silures, an ancient Celtic tribe from Wales. In 1990, a scientist named Robert J. King from the University of Leicester found an unusual fossil. Since then, scientists have found fossils of many different kinds of animals, including arthropods, worms, sponges, and other sea creatures. There are still many more fossils waiting to be studied and described.

History of research

Roderick Murchison, a leader in geology, first studied the Coalbrookdale Formation and nearby areas in the early 1830s. He named these rock layers "Silurian" after an old Celtic tribe in Wales. In 1990, a scientist named Robert J. King found small rocks in Herefordshire that held tiny fossils inside.

These fossils were later studied and found to be unique and well-preserved remains from a very old time.

The discovery excited scientists, and more research followed. They named one of the fossils Offacolus kingi in 2000 to honor King, the person who first found them. This important find helped scientists learn more about life from millions of years ago.

The Coalbrookdale Formation is found in parts of Wales and England, near their border. It formed about 430 million years ago in shallow ocean waters. This area was part of an ancient landmass called Avalonia.

Many fossils from this time are preserved here. The fossils are often found in three-dimensional shapes. They are encased in a type of rock called bentonite, which formed from volcanic ash mixed with minerals. The fossil-containing rocks are small, about the size of a cherry to a grapefruit, and can sometimes be dug up with bare hands.

Biota and importance

The Coalbrookdale Formation helps us learn about life from the Silurian Period, about 430 million years ago. It is also called the Herefordshire biota, Herefordshire Nodules, and Herefordshire Lagerstätte. Many different kinds of ancient animals have been found there, including arthropods, polychaete worms, sponges, mollusks, echinoderms, lobopods, and some other mysterious specimens. Over 32 species have been identified, with about 30 more waiting to be studied. Arthropods are the most varied group, with around 20 species, while sponges are the most common. These fossils are special because they are preserved in three dimensions. This helps scientists learn more about how these animals looked.
