Conscription in Egypt

Conscription in Egypt is a rule that makes sure some young men help keep the country safe. In Egypt, boys who are between the ages of 18 and 30 must join the military for a little while. This is called at-tagnīd in Egyptian Arabic. The rule helps Egypt have enough soldiers to protect the nation. Many other countries have similar rules too.

In Egypt, young men must join the military for a time. This rule has been in place since the 1840s and is managed by laws from 1948.

The time a man spends in service can be between 12 and 36 months, depending on factors like their education. After this service, they must be ready to help for 9 more years.

Students can wait to join until they finish their studies and are under 25 years old. They also need special permission to travel outside the country. Men with brothers may be asked to join, but those without brothers are not required to. Men older than 30 are not required to serve.

Young men can join different parts of the military, such as the Egyptian Army, the Egyptian Air Defence Forces, or the Egyptian Navy. Some can work at air bases in the Air Force. If they cannot join these groups, they serve for 36 months in the Central Security Forces. Those who have finished college may stay longer and get special positions.
