Crawford Lake (Halton Region)

Crawford Lake is a special lake near the community of Campbellville, in the town of Milton, in Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve, a place where nature and people work together to protect the environment.

The lake is important for scientists because it has layers of mud called varves that form every year. These layers help experts learn about the past, like looking back in time, to see ancient weather, animals, and people who lived long ago.

Crawford Lake is inside a protected area called the Crawford Lake Conservation Area, where people work to keep the land safe and beautiful for everyone. Near the lake, there is an old creek that flows into it, adding fresh water to this special place.

History

By studying pollen from the lake, we can learn about the area's past. We found clues about the native Iroquoians, including a village that was there before Europeans arrived, through pollen from corn and squash. The Wendat-Huron village has been rebuilt in the conservation area using research, old records, and stories from First Nations people.

We also found signs of European settlers through sawdust and ragweed pollen, showing when they built nearby towns. The Crawford family was well known in the Campbellville area for their work in the lumber business from 1882 to 1963. They ran a sawmill and lumber yard, and the lake is named after them. The family sold the land to Halton Conservation in 1969.

Lake environment

Crawford Lake formed over thousands of years when water filled a limestone cliff sinkhole. The lake has two layers: the top layer mixes with wind and other forces, while the bottom layer stays still and lets dirt build up.

Unlike most lakes, Crawford Lake's deeper water still has oxygen, which is special. In summer, when it gets warm and the water is more acidic, a white layer of rock covers the dirt at the bottom of the lake.

Ecology

Scientists looked at the mud at the bottom of Crawford Lake and found pieces of charcoal. This showed that there was more burning in the area a long time ago. They also studied pollen, which comes from plants, and saw that the forest changed from trees like maple to trees like white pine and oak.

In Anthropocene

In 2009, scientists searched for a special place to show the start of a new time called the Anthropocene. This time shows how humans changed the Earth.

In July 2023, Crawford Lake was chosen. Its mud layers clearly show how people changed the environment. These layers help us learn when the Anthropocene began, around 1950. Some people want to call this early time the Crawfordian, after the lake.
