Crocodyloidea

Crocodyloidea is one of three groups of crocodilians. The other two groups are Alligatoroidea and Gavialoidea. Crocodyloidea includes the crocodiles that live today.
Some scientists think it also includes a group called Mekosuchinae. These ancient crocodiles lived a long time ago in Australasia. They lived from a time called the Eocene until a more recent time, but not all scientists agree. These ancient crocodiles are now extinct, which means they no longer exist.
Classification
Cladistically, this group is defined by the Nile crocodile and all crocodylians more closely related to it than to the American alligator or the gharial. This helps us understand what crocodiles are. It includes many types, not just living crocodiles. When we talk only about living animals, Crocodyloidea and Crocodylidae mean the same thing, but Crocodyloidea is used when studying fossils.
Traditionally, people thought crocodiles and alligators were more closely related to each other than to gharials. But new studies using DNA showed that crocodiles are actually more closely related to gharials. This led to the creation of a new group called Longirostres.
