Historical regions of Latvia, together with Latvian cultural groups

People have lived in the area of Latvia since 9000 BC. The ancestors of today’s Latvians, known as Baltic tribes, arrived around 3000 BC. In the 13th century, Baltic Germans came and became the leaders. Latvians and Livonians were treated unfairly during this time.

In the 19th century, unfair treatment ended, and Latvians began to celebrate their own culture, language, and history. This was called the First Latvian National Awakening. Later, Russian influence grew strong, but Latvian culture kept growing. This led to independence in 1918. In 1934, a leader named Kārlis Ulmanis took control, but World War II began soon after, and Latvia was occupied by Germany and then the USSR. Latvia regained its independence in 1991.
