Diocese of Urgell

The Diocese of Urgell is a part of the Catholic Church located in Catalonia, Spain, and also includes all of the small country called the Principality of Andorra. It began a long time ago, in the 5th century AD, or maybe even earlier. The main church, called a cathedral, is in a town named la Seu d'Urgell.

One special thing about this diocese is that its leader, the bishop, also has an important job as one of the rulers of Andorra. Together with the president of France, the bishop shares the role of leader of Andorra. This makes the bishop of Urgell one of the very few leaders in the world who is also a religious leader, known as a prince-bishop.

Description of the diocesan territory

The Catholic Church controls the metropolitan church of Tarragona; this is the seat or capital of the Seu d'Urgell (Urgell See). It is the largest of eight bishoprics in Catalonia and has an area of 7630 km². The diocese covers parts of many regions, including the Ripollès, Cerdanya, Alt Urgell, Segarra, Urgell, Pla d'Urgell, Noguera, Pallars Jussà, Pallars Sobirà, Alta Ribagorça, the Vall d'Aran, and Andorra.

The diocese borders the bishoprics of Vic, Solsona, Lleida, Barbastro-Monzón, Toulouse, Pamiers, and Perpignan. It has 408 parishes, though some have very few people today. The borders of the diocese have changed many times, mostly for political reasons.

Origin of the Urgell diocese

The Diocese of Urgell began in the early 6th century. The first known bishop, Saint Justus, went to important church meetings in Toledo, Lleida, and Valencia in the 500s. Even after a big change in the area in 714, the line of bishops kept going.

During this time, many monasteries were built, like Tavèrnoles and Gerri. These monasteries followed certain rules and helped spread the Christian faith, shaping the culture and growth of the region. Later changes in the 1800s altered some of these monastic groups.

Early Middle Ages

When Arab groups moved into parts of Spain, some set up small bases in the north. One leader named Uthman ibn Naissa settled in Cerdanya and fought against faraway rulers. He was defeated and killed.

Later, a bishop named Felix led the area of Urgell. Arab forces destroyed the city and its church around the year 793. After this, new leaders helped rebuild. They built a new cathedral, finishing it in the late 800s. Many towns in the Pyrenees mountains were connected to this church.

For many years, local leaders helped guide the church of Urgell. Over time, the church gained control of many valleys and villages, including parts of Andorra. This caused some disagreements with other leaders. Later changes helped the church become more independent.
