East Quantoxhead

East Quantoxhead is a small village in England. It is in the lovely Quantock Hills, famous for their beautiful nature. The village is close to places like West Quantoxhead, Williton, and Bridgwater. Being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty means the area around East Quantoxhead is special and well cared for, making it a nice place to visit or live.

History

East Quantoxhead has a long history. Near the village, there is an old fort from the Iron Age and signs of burials from the Bronze Age. The village has interesting old buildings like a manor house with a medieval tower, thatched cottages, and a medieval barn.

In the past, the village had a small harbour used for bringing in limestone and exporting alabaster. There were also places where copper was mined long ago.

Governance

The parish council helps take care of East Quantoxhead. It decides how to spend money for local needs and checks building plans. The council works with police to keep the community safe. It also starts projects to improve local facilities and talks with bigger government groups about roads and public transport.

East Quantoxhead is part of the Somerset Council since April 1, 2023. Before that, it belonged to different local groups. The village is part of the Tiverton and Minehead area that picks a member of parliament to represent them in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

Religious sites

The village has a church named after St Mary. Some parts of the church are very old, from the 1300s. On the south wall, there is a sundial that shows the time. The church also has a wooden speaking platform made in 1633. This church is protected and recognized by English Heritage as a special Grade II* listed building.

Notable inhabitants

East Quantoxhead is where Sarah Biffen was born. She was a painter who lived when Queen Victoria was queen. Sarah was special because she was born without arms and was very short, about 37 inches tall.

The village was also home to Walter Luttrell, a landowner who served in World War II. He gave Dunster Castle to the National Trust and was made the Lord Lieutenant of Somerset.
