Ecotype

Ecotypes, also called ecospecies, are groups of living things that belong to the same species but look or act a little differently because of where they live. These differences happen because of things like the height above sea level, the weather, and what animals might try to eat them.

For example, plants or animals in a cold, high mountain area might look different from the same kind of plant or animal living in a warm, low valley nearby.

These changes help the organisms survive better in their particular place. Even though they are the same species, over time these differences can become more noticeable. In some cases, if the groups stay separated for long enough, they might even become completely new species. This shows how nature helps living things adapt to different worlds around them.

Ecotypes can be found over large areas, from one end of a country to the other, showing how flexible and strong life can be in facing different challenges.

In evolutionary ecology, an ecotype is a special group within a species. This group is adapted to live in specific environments.

Even though ecotypes can look or act differently, they can still reproduce with other nearby ecotypes. This means they can have healthy babies together.

These differences helped the plants survive better in their own places. For example, clover plants in dry areas made seeds earlier than clover in wet areas.

Another example is a small sea snail called the periwinkle, found in many coastal areas. These snails have different shell shapes and behaviors depending on where they live. In places where crabs might eat them, the snails have larger, thicker shells to stay safe. In rough wave areas, they have smaller shells that help them hold on tightly. These changes help the snails survive and pass on these traits to their young.

  • Tundra reindeer and woodland reindeer are two types of reindeer. The tundra reindeer travel very long distances every year, while the woodland reindeer mostly stay in the forests.
  • Arabis fecunda, a plant that grows only on certain soils in Montana, United States, has two types. One type lives in dry, warm areas and can survive with very little water, while the other type lives in cooler, higher places.
  • The Tucuxi dolphin has two types โ€“ one that lives in rivers and another that lives in the ocean. In 2022, scientists decided that the common bottlenose dolphin had two separate types in the western North Atlantic, and they are now considered different species.
  • The warbler finch and the Cocos Island finch are seen as different types.
The plant _[Artemisia campestris](/wiki/Artemisia_campestris)_ grows in many places from North America to Europe. It looks different depending on where it grows. For example, one type that grows on sandy beaches in Sweden has broad leaves and white hairs, while another that grows on rocky islands has spreading branches.
  • The Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) has many types across a large area from Scotland to Siberia, and they can still breed with each other.
  • Sometimes, even plants or animals that live close to each other might not want to mate with one another. For example, two groups of the same Helix snail species, living only a few hundred kilometers apart, seem to prefer not to mate with each other.
