Elaphrosaurus was a type of dinosaur that lived a very long time ago, about 155 to 145 million years ago, during a time called the Late Jurassic Period. It lived in what we now call Tanzania, in Africa.

Elaphrosaurus was not a very big dinosaur, but it was lightly built and could grow up to about 6.2 meters, or 20 feet, long.

This dinosaur was special in a couple of ways. It had a long body but a very shallow chest, which is unusual for dinosaurs of its size. Also, its back legs were very short compared to the rest of its body. Scientists think Elaphrosaurus was closely related to another dinosaur called Limusaurus.

Elaphrosaurus belonged to a group of dinosaurs known as ceratosaurians, and it was a type of theropod dinosaur. Some people once thought it might have been a coelophysoid, but most scientists now believe it was a ceratosaur. This makes Elaphrosaurus an interesting dinosaur for scientists to study.

Discovery

The main fossil of Elaphrosaurus bambergi was found in the Tendaguru Formation in the Lindi Region of Tanzania. It was discovered in 1910 by Werner Janensch and others. Today, this fossil is kept in the Natural History Museum of Berlin in Germany.

The name Elaphrosaurus comes from Greek words meaning "light-footed lizard," because scientists thought this dinosaur could run very fast. The second part of its name, bambergi, honors a person named Paul Bamberg who helped pay for the expeditions where the dinosaur was found. The fossil includes many bones such as vertebrae, a pelvic girdle, and parts of the legs. Some additional bones were later thought to belong to this dinosaur, but this is not certain.

Description

Elaphrosaurus was long and slender, with a long neck. We know about this dinosaur mostly from one nearly complete skeleton, but we haven’t found a skull. It was special because its legs were shorter compared to its body length. It was about 6–6.2 m (19.7–20.3 ft) long and weighed around 200–210 kg (440–460 lb). The shin bone of Elaphrosaurus was longer than its thigh bone, which suggests it could run well. Its tail had a rare downward bend at the end. Because its neck was thin and not very flexible, Elaphrosaurus probably did not hunt large animals. It may have eaten both plants and small animals.

Elaphrosaurus had some special features that made it different from other dinosaurs, like thin bones on its neck and a wide bone on its hip. These features help scientists identify it among other dinosaurs.

Classification

Elaphrosaurus was first described as a small type of meat-eating dinosaur called a coelurosaurian. Later, it was grouped with dinosaurs called Ornithomimidae because of its light build and a straight, slender arm bone. But more recent studies show that Elaphrosaurus is part of a group called Ceratosauria, in a smaller group named Noasauridae.

Over time, some fossils were thought to be Elaphrosaurus, but more study showed they were from different dinosaur species or groups. For example, fossils from Africa and Asia were later found to be parts of other dinosaurs, not Elaphrosaurus.

Paleobiology

Scientists have studied how Elaphrosaurus might have lived. Early ideas thought it hunted small, fast plant-eating dinosaurs. But newer studies think Elaphrosaurus might have eaten plants or both plants and small animals. This is because it is closely related to another dinosaur called Limusaurus and has a neck that is not very flexible like meat-eating dinosaurs.

The Tendaguru Formation, where Elaphrosaurus lived, was near the sea. It had both land and water animals. Scientists found many dinosaurs there. Some were big, like Giraffatitan and Australodocus. Others were smaller, like Dysalotosaurus. Other animals in the same area were flying reptiles called pterosaurs and early mammals.
