San Marino is a small country that holds elections to choose its leaders. The main group of leaders is called the Grand and General Council, which has 60 members. These members are chosen every five years by people who live in San Marino.
San Marino has many different parties, and no single party usually wins alone. Because of this, parties often need to work together to form a government. This is called a coalition government.
The first elections in San Marino happened in March 1906, after a special meeting called the Arengo decided to create a democracy. Today, there are rules to make sure that smaller parties still have a chance to be part of the government. If no group wins enough seats, the two biggest groups have a second vote to decide who will lead.

Local elections
Local elections happen every 5 years in all the municipalities. These elections choose the leaders of each town and the mayors. The most recent elections were on 29 November 2020. A system called proportional representation is used to decide who will be on the councils. Voters can pick up to 2 people they like best.
