Ezra T. Newman

Ezra Theodore Newman (October 17, 1929 – March 24, 2021) was an American physicist. He studied general relativity and shared his ideas with the world.

He worked as a professor at the University of Pittsburgh and received many awards for his work.

In 2011, Newman got the Einstein Prize from the American Physical Society. This showed how important his discoveries were to science. His work helped scientists learn more about space, time, and gravity.

Education

Ezra Newman was born in the Bronx, New York City. He loved science when he was young and was curious about things like magnets and science books.

He went to the Bronx High School of Science, where he was very good at physics. Even though his father wanted him to study dentistry, he chose to study physics at New York University. He graduated with a B.A. in 1951. Later, he went to Syracuse University for more studies, getting an M.A. in 1955 and a Ph.D. the next year.

Career in physics

Ezra Newman joined the University of Pittsburgh in 1956 and became a professor of physics there in 1966. Before that, he taught at Syracuse University and King's College London.

In 1962, he worked with Roger Penrose to create a useful method called the Newman–Penrose formalism for studying space and time. Later, he helped develop new ideas about space that include electric charge.

In 2011, Newman received the Einstein Prize (APS) for his important work in understanding the universe. His research inspired many other scientists.

Family

Ezra Newman married Sally Faskow on April 20, 1958. They had two children: David E. Newman, who became a physics professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and Dara Newman.

Selected publications

Ezra T. Newman wrote many important papers about space and gravity. Some of his well-known works include studies on how light changes when looking through space, the description of a spinning, charged object, and new ways to understand the waves that stretch and squeeze space. These papers were published in science journals and are still used by scientists today.
