Flag of Andorra
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
The national flag of Andorra (Bandera d'Andorra) is a special symbol for the country. It has three vertical stripes: blue, yellow, and red. In the middle of the yellow stripe is the coat of arms of Andorra. The coat of arms shows parts of the country’s history and values.
The flag’s design without the coat of arms was first made in 1866. For many years, there were many different versions of the flag, sometimes with horizontal stripes. But in 1993, after Andorra joined the United Nations, the flag design became official. It has stayed the same since then. Today, it is a proud symbol of Andorra and its people.
Origins and symbolism
The flag of Andorra is based on the flags of France and nearby areas. In the middle is the coat of arms of Andorra. This coat of arms has symbols linked to the Catholic bishop of Urgell, the Count of Foix, the Principality of Catalonia, and the Viscounty of Béarn. The words on the coat of arms say, Virtus Unita Fortior, meaning "Virtue United is Stronger". The flag uses blue, red, and yellow, colors also found on the Catalonian flag.
Description
The flag of Andorra has three vertical stripes: blue, yellow, and red. The yellow stripe in the middle is a bit wider than the blue stripes on the sides. In the center of the flag is the coat of arms of Andorra. This design has been used since 1866.
The government of Andorra set the official colors of the flag in 1999. The colors are carefully chosen so the flag looks the same everywhere.
History
The flag of Andorra has changed over time. In 1866, a new flag was made with vertical blue, yellow, and red stripes. This design was influenced by Napoleon III and represented France.
Later, a horizontal version of the flag was used, but its history is unclear. By around 1939, the vertical design returned with the coat of arms added in the center. The flag was officially standardized in 1993 when Andorra joined the United Nations.
