Food is any substance that living things eat to stay healthy and strong. It usually comes from plants, animals, or fungi. Food contains important things like carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. These help give energy, keep us alive, and help us grow. Different animals eat different things to stay healthy and fit into where they live.
Humans can eat both plants and animals. We often cook our food before eating it. Most of the food we eat today comes from big farms and factories. This system grows food through intensive agriculture and moves it through food processing and food distribution. However, these systems use a lot of fossil fuels, which can harm our planet.
How we grow and share food affects many important things, like sustainability, biological diversity, economics, population growth, water supply, and food security. Groups like the Food and Agriculture Organization work to make sure everyone has safe and enough food.
Definition and classification
Food is any substance we eat to give our bodies energy and help them stay healthy. It can be raw, processed, or specially made. Food helps animals grow, stay healthy, and enjoy eating.
Food is mostly made of water, lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. It may also have important things like vitamins and minerals.
People group food in different ways depending on what it is made of or how it is prepared. Most systems have four basic groups: vegetables and fruit, cereals and bread, dairy, and meat. Other systems, like those used by the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization, have more groups. These include fish, eggs, nuts, and even insects.
Food sources
In every ecosystem, food connects different living things. Primary producers, like plants and algae, make their own food using photosynthesis. Other animals, such as herbivores and carnivores, eat these plants or other animals for food. Some animals, called omnivores, eat both plants and other animals. Humans are omnivores. We eat many types of foods, like vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, milk, and grains.
Humans depend on staple foods such as corn (maize), wheat, and rice for energy. These grains are a big part of the world's food. Plants give us many foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts. Animals also give us important nutrients through meat, eggs, milk, and other products. Eating both plants and animals helps us stay healthy.
Taste

Animals, including humans, have five main tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. These tastes help us know which foods are good for us.
Sweet tastes come from sugars like glucose or fructose. Sour tastes come from acids in foods like lemons and limes. Saltiness comes from minerals like sodium and adds flavor to many foods. Bitter tastes can be unpleasant and may warn us about harmful substances. Umami is a savory taste found in foods like cheese, meat, and mushrooms.
Different animals have different numbers of taste buds. Chickens have about 30 taste buds, while catfish can have over a million. Humans have between 2000 and 4000 taste buds. Some animals, like cats, cannot taste sweetness, while others, like rodents, can taste starch.
Digestion

When we eat food, our bodies break it down into parts we can use. This happens in two ways: mechanical and chemical. Mechanical ways include chewing and moving food along the digestive system. Chemical ways use enzymes and tiny organisms to help break down the food.
Herbivores, like cows, have longer digestive systems to help them digest plants. Carnivores, like lions, have mouths made for tearing meat. Each animal has a digestive system that fits the kind of food it eats.
Food safety
Eating food that is not safe can make people sick. It is important to keep food clean and safe to help everyone stay healthy, especially young children.
