Fort Hamilton

Fort Hamilton is a United States Army base in the southwestern part of Brooklyn in New York City. It is near the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge and Dyker Heights. As part of the Military District of Washington, Fort Hamilton helps the Army National Guard and the United States Army Reserve in the New York metropolitan area.

The original fort was finished in 1831, with many big changes added in the 1870s and 1900s. Today, about half of the old defenses from the original fort are still standing. This makes Fort Hamilton a place where history and modern military work come together.

History

On July 4, 1776, soldiers at a small fort called the Narrows fired at a British ship named Asia. This was one of the first times the site was used for military purposes.

The War of 1812 showed how important coastal defense was, leading to the building of new forts including Fort Hamilton. Construction began in 1825, and the fort was finished six years later.

Fort Hamilton was mainly built to defend another fort called Fort Lafayette. It had walls, cannons, and special openings for muskets. Over time, the fort was used for many purposes, including training soldiers and protecting New York Harbor during the Civil War.

During the Civil War, Fort Hamilton helped protect the harbor. New guns were added to the fort, but changes in technology made the old stone walls outdated.

In the early 1900s, many new gun batteries were built at Fort Hamilton as part of a big improvement plan for U.S. coast defenses. The fort played roles in both World War I and World War II, mainly as a place to train soldiers.

After World War II, the old guns were removed, and Fort Hamilton continued to serve the U.S. Army in different ways.

Description

Fort Hamilton is the only active-duty military base in New York City. It was once connected to another fort called Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. Together, they were part of a group of military sites across the city, including places in Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.

Today, Fort Hamilton is home to many important military groups. It helps with recruiting new soldiers and supports Army Reserve and National Guard units. The fort also has a museum that preserves part of New York’s history. Some old buildings on the base, like the Officers’ Club and Colonels’ Row, are important historic landmarks.

Over the years, some older structures have been changed or removed, but the fort still keeps pieces of its past, like old cannons and guns, on display for people to see.

Education

People living at Fort Hamilton and their families go to schools in the New York City school system. The school for kids in grades K-8 is called P.S./I.S. 104 The Fort Hamilton School. The public high school nearby is Fort Hamilton High School.

In popular culture

Fort Hamilton has been featured in books and TV shows. In the G.I. Joe comic book, a character talks about sending prisoners to Fort Hamilton. The TV show Law and Order: Special Victims Unit also used Fort Hamilton in one of its episodes.

The fort is where the story of the book Word of Honor by Nelson DeMille takes place. In the movie The Lords of Flatbush, a character’s father is an Army officer who just started working at Fort Hamilton. The parents tell their daughter she can find them at the Fort Hamilton officers' club that night.
