Foveon X3 sensor

The Foveon X3 sensor is a special digital camera image sensor made by Foveon, Inc., which is now part of Sigma Corporation. It captures pictures in a unique way using three layers of light sensors called photodiodes stacked on top of each other. Each layer senses different colors of light because they react to different wavelengths.

This technology was first used in the Sigma SD9 DSLR camera in 2002 and later in many other Sigma cameras, including the SD10, SD14, SD15, SD1 (including SD1 Merrill), and the compact mirrorless Sigma DP1 and Sigma DP2. The idea for this sensor was developed many years earlier, in the late 1970s, by Kodak. The story of how this technology was created is told in the book The Silicon Eye by George Gilder.

Operation

The diagram shows how the Foveon X3 sensor captures images. It uses layers of special parts to sense different colors of light. The camera then combines this information to create the final picture you see.

The layers are very thin, so they do not change how well the picture focuses. However, because one of the layers is deeper, some colors may look less sharp than others.

Use

The first digital camera to use a Foveon X3 sensor was the Sigma SD9, a digital SLR from 2002. More cameras with this sensor came later, like the Sigma SD10 in 2003 and the Sigma SD14 in 2006.

Other cameras such as the Sigma SD15 in 2010 and the Sigma SD1 in 2011 also used this sensor. Small cameras like the Polaroid x530 and the Sigma DP1 used it too. By 2025, Sigma stopped using the Foveon X3 sensor in their cameras.

Comparison to Bayer-filter sensors

The Foveon X3 sensor works differently from the Bayer filter sensor, which is used more often in digital cameras. In a Bayer sensor, each tiny part (called a photosite) has one light sensor that can only see one color—red, green, or blue. To make a full-color picture, a process called demosaicing guesses the missing color information from nearby photosites.

The Foveon X3 sensor is different. It has three layers of light sensors stacked on top of each other. Each layer can sense a different color. This means the Foveon sensor does not need demosaicing to create a color image, so it avoids some color problems that Bayer sensors can have.

Because the Foveon sensor does not need demosaicing, it doesn’t need an extra filter to reduce blurry effects. However, because the colors are sensed at different depths, the colors sometimes mix a little more, which can affect color accuracy.

The Foveon sensor can also gather more light because it doesn’t block two of the three colors like a Bayer sensor does. But it can show more noise (graininess) in low-light conditions. Some tests show that Foveon sensors can be similar to Bayer sensors with fewer megapixels, but they often show sharper color detail.

Further development

As of May 2023, the Foveon X3 sensor is not as popular with most photographers. This is because other sensors, called CMOS sensors, can be made more cheaply and give higher quality pictures.

In February 2021, it was reported that the company Sigma discovered a problem with their new Foveon sensor and had to start developing it again. By February 2022, Sigma was testing a smaller version of the new sensor to see how well it works. As of March 2026, they were still working on this smaller version to make sure it meets their goals before making the full-sized sensor.
