George Henry Sanders was a British actor and singer. He worked for over 40 years. People liked his fancy English accent and smooth voice. This helped him play characters who seemed clever but sometimes tricky.

Sanders is best known for playing the wicked Jack Favell in Rebecca and the theater critic Addison DeWitt in All About Eve. For All About Eve, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also acted in many popular films such as Foreign Correspondent, Samson and Delilah, and Ivanhoe.

Besides films, Sanders did voice acting. He voiced Shere Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book. He also played Mr. Freeze in a Batman episode. He starred as Simon Templar in The Saint series.

Early life

George Sanders was born on July 3, 1906, in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His parents were Henry Sanders, who made ropes, and Margaret, who worked with plants and gardens. Both of his parents came from good families.

When the Russian Revolution began in 1917, Sanders and his family moved to Great Britain. He went to school at Bedales School and Brighton College, and later studied at Manchester Technical College. After that, he worked with textiles and even managed a tobacco farm in South America. When things got hard, he returned to Britain and worked at an advertising company. There, a woman named Greer Garson, who wanted to be an actress, encouraged him to try acting.

Career

George Sanders began his career by learning to sing and getting a small role in a play called Ballyhoo. He performed on British stages, sometimes with Edna Best. He also traveled to New York to act in a play by Noël Coward.

Sanders later worked in Hollywood. He played a villain in the film Lloyd's of London, which was very successful. His smooth accent and elegant style made him popular in American films for many years.

Sanders played many different roles. He was a hero in some films and a villain in others. One famous role was as a strict theater critic in All About Eve, for which he won an award. He appeared in many other well-known movies, showing his range as an actor.

Later, Sanders tried new types of films, including science fiction and thrillers. He also voiced a character in Disney's The Jungle Book. Sanders kept acting until near the end of his life, taking on many different roles in many films.

Personal life

George Sanders married Susan Larson, born Elsie Poole, in 1940, but they divorced in 1949. Later that year, he married Zsa Zsa Gabor, working with her in the film Death of a Scoundrel in 1956. In 1959, he married Benita Hume, the widow of Ronald Colman. Sadly, she passed away in 1967. In 1970, Sanders married Magda Gabor, Zsa Zsa’s sister, but this marriage ended after just 32 days.

In 1942, Sanders won an award called the Sour Apple Award for being difficult on film sets. In 1960, he published an autobiography titled Memoirs of a Professional Cad, which was praised for its clever writing.

George Sanders felt lonely and sad in his last years. Many important people in his life had died, and he lost a lot of money. He also had health problems and drank too much.

Sadly, Sanders died in April 1972 in a hotel near Barcelona after taking some medication. He is remembered for his acting, and he has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Broadway

George Sanders acted in a play named Conversation Piece at the 44th Street Theatre in 1934. This was one of many acting jobs he had during his career.
