Gottfried Keller

Gottfried Keller (19 July 1819 – 15 July 1890) was a Swiss poet and writer of German literature. He was born in Zurich and became a popular storyteller in the late 1800s. His stories focused on everyday people and their lives.

Keller is best known for his novel called Green Henry (in German, Der grüne Heinrich). This book tells the story of a young artist and his dreams. It shows what it was like to grow up and follow your passions at that time.

Another famous work by Keller is a group of short stories called Seldwyla Folks (Die Leute von Seldwyla). These funny and touching stories are about the people of a small town. Through these tales, Keller showed the beauty and humor in ordinary lives.

Keller's writing helped make literary realism popular. This means his stories were very true to life, showing real feelings and situations. Because of this, he is still remembered today as a great writer.

Early life

Gottfried Keller's father was Rudolf Keller, a lathe-worker from Glattfelden, and his mother was Elisabeth Scheuchzer. They had six children, but only Keller and his sister Regula survived. After Keller's father passed away from tuberculosis, the family had a hard time. Keller wrote about his childhood in his novel Der grüne Heinrich. His mother tried to help him and let him choose his own path.

Career

Gottfried Keller loved painting when he was young. He studied art in Munich and later in Zürich, but he chose to focus on writing instead. He wrote his first poems in 1846 and later studied in Heidelberg.

Keller moved to Berlin from 1850 to 1856, where he started his writing career. There, he wrote his famous novel Green Henry, which is based on his own life as a young artist. He also wrote a collection of short stories called Seldwyla Folks, which includes tales like “The Three Honest Joiners” and “Romeo and Juliet in the Village.”

In 1861, Keller returned to Zürich and took a government job. He kept writing, and after retiring in 1876, he continued to create more literature until his death. Even though he was quiet, many people came to love and respect him.

Evaluation

Gottfried Keller became well-known for his short stories. He wrote many tales that show everyday life in a calm, tidy way. These stories helped people see new ideas about growing up and being independent, special to Switzerland.

Gottfried Keller Foundation

Lydia Escher used some of her family’s money to create a special group to honor Gottfried Keller. She gave a big house called Villa Belvoir and other valuable things to start this group. The Swiss government helps manage it.

The foundation is now in Winterthur and is very important for keeping valuable items safe. In 2019, people celebrated Keller’s 200th birthday with a big book about his life.
