The governor-general of Belize is the representative of the Belizean monarch, currently King Charles III, in Belize. This role helps connect the country to its monarch and supports the government. The governor-general is chosen by the monarch based on the suggestion of the prime minister of Belize.

Some key jobs of the governor-general include choosing important leaders like ministers, judges, and ambassadors. They also give special approval, called royal assent, to laws made by the National Assembly. Another job is to start official elections by issuing writs for election.

Usually, the governor-general follows rules set by the Westminster system and responsible government. They stay neutral and act on the advice of the prime minister. Besides these duties, the governor-general takes part in ceremonies, such as hosting events at Belize House in the capital, Belmopan, and giving special awards to people who help their communities. When visiting other countries, the governor-general stands for Belize and its monarch.

The position of governor-general started on 21 September 1981, when Belize became independent from the United Kingdom. Since then, three people have held this role. As of 27 May 2021, the governor-general has been Dame Froyla Tzalam, and they serve for seven years at a time.

Appointment

The governor-general of Belize is chosen by the country's monarch. The prime minister of Belize suggests a name, and the monarch usually agrees with that choice. When the new governor-general starts their job, they take an important promise called the Oath of Allegiance and Office. A chief justice in Belize helps them make this promise.

Functions

The governor-general of Belize has an important job in the country's government. They help start new elections and ask the leader of the winning political party to form a government. After elections, they officially choose the prime minister and other leaders.

One key job of the governor-general is to give approval, known as royal assent, to laws that the Belize National Assembly passes. They also make important choices, like picking judges and ambassadors, based on advice from government leaders.

In addition to these duties, the governor-general takes part in special events. They open new sessions of parliament, welcome important visitors from other countries, and honor people who have done great service or brave acts for the community.

Privileges

The Governor-General (Conditions of Service) Act 1989 sets the salary and benefits for the governor-general. In 2021, the salary was raised to BZ$75,000.

The governor-general has a special flag with a lion passant on a royal crown and the word "Belize" below, shown on a blue background. This flag shows where the governor-general is visiting. A special salute with music from "God Save the King" and the Belizean National Anthem, "Land of the Free", welcomes the governor-general to events.

Until 1984, the governor-general lived at Government House, Belize. After the capital moved to Belmopan in 1970, the governor-general moved to Belize House in Belmopan in 1984.
