Governor-General of Saint Lucia

The governor-general of Saint Lucia (Saint Lucian Creole French: Gouvènè Jennéwal Sent Lisi) is the representative of the Saint Lucian monarch, currently King Charles III, in Saint Lucia. This role helps connect the country to its monarch and supports the government.

The governor-general has several key duties. These include choosing leaders for government positions, agreeing to new laws, and starting official elections. The governor-general usually follows the advice of the prime minister of Saint Lucia and stays neutral in politics.

Besides these tasks, the governor-general also takes part in special events. They welcome guests to their home, Government House in Castries, and honor people who do good work in their communities. When the governor-general travels to other countries, they represent both Saint Lucia and its monarch.

Since 1 November 2024, Errol Charles has served as the governor-general. The position was created on 22 February 1979, when Saint Lucia became independent from the United Kingdom. Since then, seven people have held this role.

Appointment

The governor-general of Saint Lucia is chosen by the monarch of Saint Lucia. The prime minister suggests a name, and the monarch usually agrees. The governor-general promises to serve the country well at the start of their job.

Functions

Saint Lucia shares its monarch with 14 other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. The governor-general does the monarch’s work in Saint Lucia because the monarch lives far away.

The governor-general chooses important leaders such as the Prime Minister, the Cabinet, the Chief Justice of Saint Lucia, and members of the Senate. They also give royal assent to laws made by the Parliament of Saint Lucia. The governor-general talks with the Prime Minister about important government matters.

The governor-general also has ceremonial tasks. These include opening new sessions of parliament with the Speech from the Throne, welcoming visiting leaders, and giving awards for brave and helpful actions.

The governor-general also helps the community by leading many charitable groups and attending important national events.

Privileges

The governor-general of Saint Lucia leads a special group called the Order of Saint Lucia. Queen Elizabeth II created this group in 1986.

The governor-general receives a yearly payment of US$36,112 for their work.

The governor-general has a special flag with a lion and the words "Saint Lucia" on it. This flag is shown when the governor-general is in Saint Lucia.

The official home of the governor-general is Government House in Castries. This building has been used as the home and office for governors-general since Saint Lucia became independent in 1979.
