The Governor of the Santiago Metropolitan Region is an important leader chosen by people who live in the area. Since 2021, the governor is picked by voting. The Santiago Metropolitan Region is a very important part of Chile. The governor helps make sure the region runs well and supports its many residents.

History

In 2017, Chile changed its rules so people could vote for leaders of regional governments. This created the job of Regional Governor and a representative for the President of Chile in each region.

The first elections for regional governors in Chile were held on May 15 and 16, 2021. The people who were elected began their jobs on July 14, 2021. Claudio Orrego, a former minister, won the election for the Santiago Metropolitan Region and became the first Regional Governor. He was reelected for another term on November 24, 2024.
