Guglielmo Pepe

Guglielmo Pepe (13 February 1783 – 8 August 1855) was an Italian general and patriot. He played an important role in the battles for Italy's freedom.

Pepe was the brother of Florestano Pepe and the cousin of Gabriele Pepe. He married Mary Ann Coventry, a Scottish woman. Mary Ann was previously married to John Borthwick Gilchrist, who was a linguist and surgeon for the East India Company.

Biography

Guglielmo Pepe was born in Squillace in Calabria. He joined the army when he was young and fought in the Neapolitan Republic in 1799, inspired by the French Revolution. He was captured and sent to France, where he joined Napoleon's army and fought in many battles.

Later, Pepe returned to Italy and became a general. He tried to help create a new government but faced many challenges. During a big conflict in 1821, he led soldiers but was not successful. Pepe spent time in different countries, writing about politics. He later returned to Italy during a revolution in 1848. He helped defend the city of Venice but had to leave when it surrendered. Pepe died in Turin in 1855.

Guglielmo Pepe wrote several important books. One book came out in 1822. Another was published in 1847. In 1848, he wrote a book about Italy. His last book was published in 1851.
