Guo Yue (table tennis)

Guo Yue

simplified Chinese: 郭跃; traditional Chinese: 郭躍; pinyin: Guō Yuè) was born on July 17, 1988, in Anshan, Liaoning. She is a Chinese table tennis player who became the 2007 women's world champion.

Guo Yue was once a key member of the Chinese National Table Tennis Team. She had to leave the team in 2015. After this, she chose to focus on her studies and began learning about finance at Tsinghua University.

Career

Guo Yue was a left-handed table tennis player from Liaoning, China. She played with a shakehand grip. Her first doubles partner was Niu Jianfeng from Hebei. Later, her partner and roommate was Li Xiaoxia.

After some losses, Guo took a break to rest. She returned at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, where she won gold medals in singles, doubles, and the team event. In 2007, she did very well in several international tournaments. She won the women’s singles title at the 2007 World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, beating Li Xiaoxia in the final. She also won a mixed doubles title with Wang Liqin.

Controversy

Guo Yue had some problems in 2010. People said she showed poor behavior and didn’t seem very interested in playing table tennis. There were stories about her missing a meeting, which caused issues with another top player. After the London 2012 Olympics, she played for a team in her home province. In 2015, she left the National Team and began studying finance at Tsinghua University.

Achievements

Guo Yue won many awards in table tennis. She won the Japan East Asian Junior Championship in 1999 and came second in the Asian Cup in 2000. She reached the finals of the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Finals in 2002 and won medals at the Asian Championships and World Championships.

She won gold medals at the 2004 Athens Olympics in women's doubles and at the 2006 Asian Games in women's team, singles, and doubles. Guo Yue became the world champion in women's singles at the 2007 World Table Tennis Championship and won a bronze medal in women's singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
