Health
Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience
Health is about how well our bodies and minds work. It means being strong, feeling good, and not having illnesses or injuries. When we are healthy, our bodies work properly, and we can play, learn, and enjoy life.
We can help our health in many ways. Doing regular physical exercise, like playing sports or walking, is great for our bodies. Getting enough sleep each night also helps us stay healthy. On the other hand, things like smoking or feeling too much stress can hurt our health.
Some parts of health are up to us, like choosing not to do risky things. But other parts depend on things around us, like whether we can easily see a doctor when we are sick. Even some health problems are caused by things we cannot change, like genetics. Understanding health helps us take better care of ourselves and each other.
History
The idea of health has changed over time. Early ideas focused on the body working well, without sickness or injury. In 1948, the World Health Organization (WHO) offered a new way to think about health. They said health is not just about not being sick, but also about feeling good in body, mind, and social life.
Since then, health has been seen as a tool that helps people live well. It means being strong enough to handle stress, learn new things, and keep good relationships. Programs like Healthy People in the United States aim to improve health by setting goals and focusing on ways to stay healthy. Many things affect health, including where we live, how we live, and our everyday choices.
Determinants

Where and how a person lives affects their health and happiness. Health is more than just medicine; it’s also about our daily lives and choices. The World Health Organization says health depends on a person’s situation, their environment, and their own actions and traits.
Things that help health include living where there is clean water, safe homes, and good healthcare. Living near nature and getting enough exercise can also help.
Living well—like getting enough sleep, eating good food, and not doing harmful things like smoking—is important for health. Even people with health problems can still feel good and happy.
Our environment, such as air and water quality, also affects health. Clean air, safe places, and access to nature help people stay healthy, especially children.
Genetics, or traits from parents, can affect health. This can include risks for some diseases and habits that families share.
Potential issues
Many health problems are common around the world. Diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and lung disease affect many people.
Not having enough food, especially for young children, is also a big problem.
Injuries, like broken bones or burns, can affect health too. Choices such as smoking, not eating well, not exercising, and not sleeping enough can lead to health problems. Some health issues can also be passed down in families.
Sadly, many people don’t have good healthcare, which makes it harder to stay healthy.
Mental health
Main article: Mental health
The World Health Organization says mental health is about feeling good and being able to handle daily life, work, and help the community. It’s not just about not having a mental illness.
Mental health problems can change how a person thinks, feels, and acts. Common issues include schizophrenia, ADHD, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and autism.
Things that can lead to mental health problems include family history, brain chemistry, and life experiences.

Maintaining
Keeping good health is an important part of life. It needs learning about health and making good choices, as well as actions from our community.
Diet

Eating healthy foods helps us stay well. Good food includes many types from plants and animals that give our bodies the nutrients they need. Nutrients give us energy and help our bodies work right. They help build strong bones and muscles and keep our bodies running well, like keeping our blood pressure balanced. Water is important for helping our bodies grow and stay healthy. We eat some foods, called macronutrients, in large amounts — such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Others, called micronutrients — like vitamins and minerals — we need in smaller amounts, but they are still very important. Guides like the food guide pyramid show us how much of each food to eat to stay healthy. Choosing healthy foods can help keep us at a good weight.
The Mediterranean diet is often linked with good health.
Exercise
Main article: Exercise
Physical exercise helps our bodies stay strong. It makes our bones and muscles stronger and helps our heart work better. There are four main kinds of exercise: endurance, strength, flexibility, and balance. Doing exercise can help prevent health problems. It’s best to start slowly, but even small activities like walking are good for us.
Sleep
Main articles: Sleep and Sleep deprivation
Getting enough sleep is very important for our health. For children, sleep helps them grow. Not getting enough sleep can make it easier to get sick. Experts say that getting the right amount of sleep for our age is important for staying healthy.
Role of science
Health science is the study of how our bodies work and how to keep them healthy. It includes learning about biology, chemistry, physics, and other subjects. Health science uses this knowledge in many areas, such as health education and public health. Health professionals, including doctors and nurses, use this science to help people stay healthy.
Health care
Modern medicine usually happens within health care systems. These systems decide how medical care is given and who can receive it. Many countries provide health care for everyone. This is often done through systems where the government pays for health care.
Most societies that are not very advanced may not have health care for everyone. In these places, people can only get care if they can pay for it themselves.
Being open about health information is also important. When people can learn about health conditions and treatments, they can make better choices about their care.

Medical care is given in three main ways.
Primary care is the first kind of medical help people get. It is usually provided by doctors or nurse practitioners in places like doctor’s offices or clinics. Most visits to doctors are for primary care.
Secondary care is given by medical specialists. People are sent to these doctors when they need special kinds of care.
Tertiary care is the most advanced kind of medical care. It is given in special hospitals with advanced equipment.
Role of public health

Public health is about keeping whole communities healthy. It focuses on preventing diseases and injuries before they happen. Public health workers look at how healthy groups of people are and find ways to improve that health. They work in many areas, such as studying how diseases spread and helping people live healthier lives.
Public health actions include teaching people about healthy behaviors and creating rules to protect health. Public health also tries to make sure that everyone has a fair chance to be healthy. This includes helping mothers and children and organizing health services.
Because of public health efforts, life expectancy has increased around the world.

Keeping good health also depends on what we do every day. This includes taking care of our bodies, like washing and brushing our teeth, eating safe food, and getting enough sleep. It also means watching how we feel and making choices that help us stay healthy.
Our health is also connected to how we interact with others. Having good friendships and being part of a community can make us feel happier. Long periods of stress can hurt our health. Managing stress means finding ways to lower stress or become better at handling it.

Occupational
Main article: Occupational safety and health
Some jobs can have risks that may cause health problems. Certain jobs can lead to diseases like lung conditions and breathing problems. Workers might also face skin issues or other health concerns.
As more jobs involve sitting, new health challenges have arisen, like weight gain and stress. Many countries have groups to help protect workers' health and safety, such as the Health and Safety Executive in Britain and organizations in the United States that create rules to keep workers safe.
