Huainan biota

The Huainan biota is a special group of very old organisms found in China in the early 1980s. These fossils come from rocks that are extremely old, from a time before many complex life forms existed on Earth. They were discovered near a place called Huainan in the Anhui Province.

Scientists study these fossils to learn how life on Earth changed and developed long ago. The Huainan biota shows a mix of simple and more complex life forms, helping us understand how life became more advanced. This discovery is very important for learning about the history of life on our planet.

Discovery and age

Scientists found the Huainan biota in the 1980s in rocks near Huainan City. These ancient organisms lived between 840 and 740 million years ago, during the Tonian period. This was a time when life on Earth began to change from very small microbes to larger forms.

Geologic setting

In the Huainan area, the rock layers from a very old time are sorted into three main groups: the Huainan Group, Feishui Group, and the Fengtai Formation. Each group shows a different kind of rock made long ago.

The Huainan group has rocks made mostly of sand and mud. The Feishui group has rocks made from minerals, like limestone, and it holds fossils. The Fengtai Formation has rocks from old ice ages, called diamictites.

Fossil description

Scientists found two kinds of ancient life forms in rocks from a place called the Jiuliqiao Formation. These rocks are from a very old time called the Ediacaran Period. One group of life looked like tiny worms or tubes. The other group looked like small, round discs with a hole in the middle. Both of these ancient life forms were very small.

Similar biota

Scientists found a group of very old organisms in Russia that are about 1 billion years old. These organisms are called Protoarenicola, Pararenicola, and Sinosabellidites. They were a few centimeters long and looked like small, segmented tubes, sometimes shaped like cups with extensions at the ends. Unlike the Huainan biota, these organisms did not look like jellyfish discs or have shapes similar to sponges that are seen in the Ediacaran biota.
