Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama

Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama, often called HMMA, is a big car factory in Montgomery, Alabama. It is where workers build cars for the Hyundai brand, a popular car company from South Korea.

History

The Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama factory was started by Hyundai Motor Company from South Korea in April 2002. Building ended in June 2004, and the factory began making cars in May 2005. A big opening happened on May 20, 2005, with the former President of the United States, George H. W. Bush and Hyundai leaders.

In 2013, about 3,000 people worked there. Over time, Hyundai added more money and projects to the factory. In 2011, they added money to make more engines. In 2018, they spent money to build a new area for engine parts. In 2019, they said they would start making the Santa Cruz vehicle in 2021, and production began in June 2021. Later, they also started making hybrid and electric versions of some cars there.

Operation

The HMMA plant was built to create many new jobs and bring a lot of money into the area. It can make up to 400,000 cars and 700,000 engines each year. It also has a special area for trains to move cars around.

Because this plant did so well, Hyundai decided to build another plant nearby for Kia Motors. This new plant is in West Point, Georgia, not too far from the HMMA plant in Alabama. The two plants work closely together, sometimes moving work from one to the other. For example, some SUV making started at the HMMA plant between 2012 and 2018.

This factory makes many cars and SUVs. Some of these are the Hyundai Santa Fe, Hyundai Tucson, Hyundai Santa Cruz, and the Genesis Electrified GV70.

The factory also builds many engines. Some of these are the Hyundai Theta engine, Hyundai Nu engine, and Hyundai Smartstream engine.

Former products

In the past, the factory made cars like the Hyundai Sonata, Hyundai Elantra, and the Hyundai Lambda engine.

Controversies

In July 2022, a news report said that a company working with Hyundai hired children as young as 12 years old to help make car parts. Hyundai said they do not allow illegal work rules for anyone they work with. Laws say that people younger than 18 should not work near dangerous machines in these kinds of jobs.
