An image or picture is a visual representation. It can be something flat, like a drawing, painting, or photograph, or something that has depth, like a carving or sculpture. Images can appear in many ways, such as being shown on a screen, projected onto a wall, or printed on paper.
In science, an image can mean the way light shows us an object, like when we look through a telescope or use a camera. Some images only last a short time, like what you see in a mirror or on a screen, while others are fixed, like a photo you can hold.
We also think about images in our minds, such as remembering a friend's face or imagining a magical place. To share these mental pictures with others, we use words or create things like drawings or stories.
Characteristics
An image is a way to show something visually. It can be flat, like a map, painting, or banner, or it can be made by hand through drawing or graphic arts. Images can also be created using machines like computers or printers.
Some special tools help us see things that are too small or far away, like microscopy for tiny objects or telescopes for distant stars. There are also ways to see inside the body using X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Images can also be three-dimensional, like sculptures, or made to look three-dimensional using special technology such as holography. Moving images, like those in movies or on television, are made by showing many still pictures very quickly, tricking our eyes into seeing motion.
Other considerations
Images can be still or moving. A still image is one picture, like a photograph or a drawing, that does not change. Moving images are like movies or videos that change over time. In books and stories, writers use words to help us picture things in our minds, creating mental images.
