Jacques-Yves Cousteau (/kuːˈstoʊ/, also UK: /ˈkuːstoʊ/; French: ; 11 June 1910 – 25 June 1997) was a French naval officer, oceanographer, filmmaker and author. He helped create the first successful self-contained underwater breathing apparatus, called the Aqua-Lung. This tool let him make some of the first underwater documentaries.
Cousteau wrote many books about his ocean adventures. In his first book, The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, he thought that porpoises might use sounds to find their way. This book became a famous film, also called The Silent World. Cousteau co-directed this film with Louis Malle. It was one of the first movies to show beautiful pictures from deep underwater. The film won important awards, including the 1956 Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
From 1966 to 1976, Cousteau hosted a television series called The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. Later, from 1977 to 1982, he made another series named The Cousteau Odyssey. This series aired on public television.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a French naval officer, ocean scientist, filmmaker, and writer. He was born on June 11, 1910, in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, France. After studying in Paris, he joined the French Navy. Later, he changed his work to study the ocean after an accident hurt his arms.
Cousteau and his friend Philippe Tailliez made early breathing tools for underwater. This led to the invention of the Aqua-Lung. This tool helped him make some of the first underwater movies. He wrote many books about his adventures under the water. He spent his life exploring and protecting the ocean. He started the Cousteau Society to help save ocean life. He inspired many people around the world with his love for the sea.
Death and legacy
Jacques-Yves Cousteau passed away from a heart attack in Paris in 1997, just two weeks after his 87th birthday. He was buried in the family vault in his birthplace, Saint-André-de-Cubzac. The town honored him by naming a street "rue du Commandant Cousteau" and placing a commemorative plaque there.
Cousteau left behind a wonderful legacy, including many television documentaries and books. He started an environmental protection foundation with many members. His work helped people learn about and care for the oceans. He made science easy to understand, helping many others share knowledge in a simple way. Today, the Cousteau Society and its French counterpart, l'Équipe Cousteau, continue his important work.
Awards and honors
Jacques-Yves Cousteau received many awards for his work. Some of these include the Cross of War 1939–1945 in 1945, the National Geographic Society’s Special Gold Medal in 1961, and the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985. He was also honored with titles such as Commander of the Legion of Honour and elected to the Académie Française in 1988.
