Portrait of John Lloyd Stephens, an American writer and explorer from the 1800s.

John Lloyd Stephens was an American explorer, writer, and diplomat. He lived from November 28, 1805, to October 13, 1852.

Stephens helped people learn about the ancient Maya civilization in Middle America. His work showed the world how amazing these people and their history were.

He also helped build the Panama Canal Railway in the 1850s. This railway was important because it later helped make the Panama Canal possible. This changed how ships could travel between oceans.

Early life

John Lloyd Stephens was born on November 28, 1805, in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, which later became part of Red Bank, New Jersey. He was the second son of Benjamin Stephens, a successful merchant, and Clemence Lloyd, whose father was a well-known judge. The family moved to New York City the next year, where Stephens studied at private schools and later attended Columbia College. He graduated at the top of his class in 1822.

After studying law for a year, Stephens went to the Litchfield Law School, passed the bar exam, and began practicing law in New York City. In 1834, he traveled through Europe, then went to Egypt and the Levant, returning in 1836. He wrote several popular books about his travels and discoveries.

Politics

John Lloyd Stephens was asked to be the official representative to the Netherlands in 1837. But President Martin Van Buren chose someone else, Harmanus Bleecker. Bleecker stayed in that job until 1842. In 1846, Stephens joined a meeting to change some state rules. He helped start a small court for minor disagreements.

Mesoamerican studies

John Lloyd Stephens read stories about old cities in Mesoamerica written by explorers like Alexander von Humboldt and Juan Galindo. In 1839, President Martin Van Buren sent him as a special Ambassador to Central America.

Stephens and his friend, architect Frederick Catherwood, found amazing old Maya ruins at a place called Copán after arriving in British Honduras, now Belize. They mapped the site and drew detailed pictures of the buildings. They visited many other Maya sites, including Palenque, Quiriguá, and Uxmal. Their work showed that the Maya people built these incredible ancient cities and were very skilled and creative.

John Lloyd Stephens helped start the Panama Railroad Company in 1849. The railroad was built to help people travel across the narrow part of Panama. This was very helpful after the California gold rush of 1848, when many people wanted to travel across North America.

Stephens visited Panama to help build the railroad. He fell off his mule and was hurt. He went back to the United States and became the first president of the railroad company. He worked hard to finish the railroad, but he became ill and passed away in 1852. The railroad was finally finished in 1855.

Personal life

In 1841, Stephens joined the American Philosophical Society. While he was in Panama, he fell very ill with malaria in spring of 1852. After recovering, he returned to New York, but he became ill again. He passed away on October 13, 1852, and was buried at the New York City Marble Cemetery.
