King's Parade is a famous street in central Cambridge, England. It is a busy place for tourists, students, and cyclists. The street connects to Trinity Street and St John's Street to the north and Trumpington Street to the south.
The street is named after King's College, which is on the west side. The beautiful Chapel of King's College can be seen at the east end of the street. Nearby is the Senate House, where the University of Cambridge holds degree ceremonies. This spot is called Senate House Hill. Across from the Senate House stands Great St Mary's, the historic church of the university.
History
The White Horse Tavern was a popular meeting place in the 1500s for people sharing new ideas. It was torn down in 1870 to make room for a college building.
Bowes & Bowes, a bookstore at the south end of King's Parade, might be the oldest in the United Kingdom. It sold books from 1581 until it closed in 1986. Today it is a bookshop for the Cambridge University Press.
When King's College built its gatehouse and screen in the 1830s, some parts of the street were removed. Now the area has many shops for visitors.
At number 1 King's Parade, a building housed a wine shop in the 1950s and 1960s. It later held different businesses and is now a restaurant called The Cambridge Chop House.
In the 1970s, a company that helped begin the home computer revolution started at 6 King's Parade. The building is now a meditation centre.
At the south end of King's Parade, near Corpus Christi College, stands the Corpus Clock, an art piece installed in 2008 that many visitors like.
