Kirby Cane

Kirby Cane is a small village and a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is about 3.8 miles northwest of Beccles and 14 miles southeast of Norwich, near the River Waveney.

The village is in the southern part of the parish and is close to the village of Ellingham. The area also has a smaller place called Kirby Green. This quiet spot is part of the beautiful countryside in Norfolk.

Etymology

The name Kirby comes from an old language called Old Norse. It means "village with a church". The word Cane refers to a family that owned land in the area long ago.

History

In the Domesday Book, Kirby Cane was a small place with 28 homes in the hundred of Clavering. In 1086, the land was owned by different important people, including Hugh d'Avranches, Earl of Chester, St Edmunds Abbey, and Ralph Baynard, who lived in East Anglia.

A big house named Kirby Cane Hall, made of red bricks, was built in the 1600s. It was changed and improved over many years. During World War II, soldiers practiced near Kirby Cane Hall by digging trenches. Today, maps show the area as Kirby Cane.

Geography

Kirby Cane is a small village in the county of Norfolk. In 2021, 449 people lived there. This was a little more than the 434 people counted in 2011.

All Saints' Church

Kirby Cane's parish church is very old, dating back to medieval times. It is one of Norfolk's 124 remaining round-tower churches. The church is on Wash Lane, toward the north of the parish. It has been important since 1960. The church is open once a month for Sunday services. It is part of the Waveney Marshlands Benefice.

The church has a special font from the 14th century and a brass memorial plaque.

Governance

The first level of local government for Kirby Cane is the Kirby Cane & Ellingham Parish Council.

Kirby Cane is in the Ditchingham & Earsham electoral ward and the South Norfolk district. For national elections, the village is part of the Waveney Valley constituency. Adrian Ramsay MP from the Green Party has represented this area since 2024.

War Memorial

Kirby Cane has a war memorial inside All Saints' Church. It is made of marble plaques and lists the names of people who served in the First World War.

After the Second World War, more names were added to the memorial.
