Kirra, Queensland

Kirra is a lovely beach neighbourhood in the suburb of Coolangatta in the City of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. It is famous for its sandy beaches and is a popular place for both visitors and locals to enjoy the ocean. The area is part of a sunny region with many fun activities, making it a great spot to relax and play near the water. Kirra provides a calm setting while still being close to many attractions and services.

Geography

Kirra Point is a small rocky area. It separates Kirra Beach to the north and Coolangatta Beach to the south. The area is famous for being a great place to surf. In the past, it had excellent waves, but sand from the Tweed River has changed the area.

History

The name Kirra comes from Kirra Hill, which is 27 metres above sea level. The name first appeared on a map in 1883 made by a surveyor named Mr. Schneider. People think the name might come from an Indigenous word, but we don't know the exact language or meaning.

Before 1840, Kirra wasn't known by this name and few visitors came there. In the 1840s, the first white holiday-makers began visiting. By 1910 to 1920, more and more people came, making Kirra a popular beach spot.

In 1914, 18 places to build homes and businesses were advertised for sale near what is now Kirra. In the 1930s, a new road made the southern Gold Coast even more popular for holidays. Families liked camping there because of the long beach and sandy dunes.

In 1972, the government built a barrier called a groyne to help stop sand from washing away at Coolangatta beach. This helped keep the sand in place, which was important for tourism. Later, a smaller barrier was built at Kirra beach as well. Over time, these barriers became covered with sand.

In 2001, a project began to help move sand from the Tweed River to the beaches. By 2003, the smaller barrier was completely covered in sand. In 2006, a university started a project to help restore the beach.

Environment

The sand pumping has changed the area around the reef. A place where people liked to dive and see sea creatures has been covered by sand since the pumping started. Now, diving groups go to other smaller reef spots instead. The contract for sand pumping will last until 2024, and then people will decide what to do next.
