Kujalleq

Kujalleq is a municipality on the southern tip of Greenland. It started on January 1, 2009. The main town and administrative center is Qaqortoq, once called Julianehåb. The name Kujalleq means "The South" in the Greenlandic language. This area is part of Greenland, a large island northeast of North America.

Creation

The municipality of Kujalleq was formed on 1 January 2009. It includes several areas from older municipalities in southern Greenland. These areas are named after their largest towns: Nanortalik Municipality, Narsaq Municipality, and Qaqortoq Municipality.

Some uninhabited parts from the older Paamiut and Ammassalik municipalities were also added to Kujalleq. The part from Paamiut was a small area of the ice sheet with a few nunataks. The part from Ammassalik included the coast from Kangerlussuatsiaq fjord (called Lindenow Fjord in Danish) to north of Timmiarmiut.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of Kujalleq shows a ram's head. This represents the important sheep farming in the area. The top part of the shield includes the sun from the Greenlandic flag. The colors also match those of the country's flag. The coat of arms was adopted in August 2008.

Geography

Kujalleq is the smallest part of Greenland. It covers 32,000 km². It is at the southern tip of the island. It shares a border with only one other part, Sermersooq, to the north. The western coast of Kujalleq touches the Labrador Sea. This sea connects to the open North Atlantic at Uummannarsuaq, the southern cape. The western coast border follows Alanngorsuaq Fjord. On the eastern coast, it reaches Anorituup Kangerlua Fjord.

The land is very mountainous. Many fjords cut deep into the land. All the settlements in Kujalleq are along the western coast or in the fjords that end there.

Politics

Kujalleq's municipal council has 15 members. People in the area choose them every four years.

The municipality of Kujalleq has several small towns and villages. In the Nanortalik area, you can find places like Nanortalik, Aappilattoq, and Alluitsup Paa. The Narsaq area includes towns such as Igaliku and Narsarsuaq. The Qaqortoq area, where the main town is located, has places like Qaqortoq and Eqalugaarsuit.

Transportation

The only airport in Kujalleq is Narsarsuaq Airport. People can also use helicopters and boats to travel to nearby places.

International relations

Kujalleq has a special friendship with Aarhus in Denmark. This means the two places work together and help each other, like family members supporting one another.
