The national language of Andorra is Catalan. Catalan is a Romance language and many people speak it in Spain and France. Catalan is the only official language in Andorra, but many people also speak Spanish.
Because Andorra is close to France and has people from many places, some people also speak French and Portuguese. This is mostly because of immigration. Most people in Andorra can speak more than one language. They usually speak Catalan and their own native language.

Catalan

Catalan is the official language of Andorra. The government, TV, radio, and other national media use Catalan. It is the main language for people born in Andorra. The local version of Catalan is called Northwestern Catalan.
The government of Andorra encourages immigrants to learn Catalan. Most signs in Andorra are only in Catalan. Andorra is special because Catalan is the only official language in the whole country.
Spanish

Spanish is very important in Andorra, just after Catalan. It is mainly spoken by many people from Spain who live there. Because so many people speak Spanish, it has become the second most used language in the country. It is often used when people who speak different languages talk to each other.
Portuguese

In the past, many people from Portugal moved to Andorra. In 2008, the most Portuguese people lived there. That year, 13,794 people, or 16.3% of the country, were from Portugal.
French

Andorra is next to France, so many people from France live there. About 7% of Andorra’s people are from France, especially from Francophone Africa. French is often spoken, especially in Pas de la Casa, a town on the border with France.
Families can choose to teach their children French at school if they want, just like they can choose Spanish.
