Belize is a country where many different languages are spoken. The three most common languages are English, Spanish, and Kriol. Many people in Belize can speak each of these languages.
English is the official language of Belize. It is used in schools and government work. Only a few people speak English as their first language, but most people learn it in school. Spanish is also taught in schools, and many people speak both English and Spanish. Almost half of the people also know Kriol.

Standard English and Belizean Creole
English is the official language of Belize. People use it in schools, government, and news. But most people grow up speaking Belizean Creole at home.
Belizean Creole is a mix of languages. Many people switch between English and Creole easily. This helps everyone understand each other better. In 2007, a special book was made to help people learn both languages.
Spanish
Main article: Belizean Spanish
About half of the people in Belize speak Spanish. It is the first language for many, and children learn it in school even if they don’t speak it at home. In some towns, people mix Spanish with Belizean Creole, calling it “Kitchen Spanish.”
Many people in Belize can speak more than one language. This is helpful because Belize is a small country next to places where Spanish is spoken.
Other languages
Belize has three Mayan languages: Q’eqchi’, Mopan, and Yucatec Maya. About 16,100 people speak the Garifuna language.
German is spoken in Mennonite communities. Most Mennonites use Plautdietsch every day. A smaller group speaks Pennsylvania German. They use an old version of German in their churches and writings.
