Las Piedras, Uruguay

Las Piedras is a city in the Canelones Department of Uruguay. It is an important place in the country. It was the seventh most populated city in 2011. The city gives its name to the municipality, meaning it is the main town of that area. Uruguay is known for its beautiful landscapes and friendly people.

Geography

Las Piedras is a city on the east side of Route 5, just north of where Montevideo Department starts. It is close to the towns of La Paz and Montevideo and is part of the bigger area around Montevideo. Two small rivers, Arroyo Colorado and Arroyo de las Piedras, run near the city.

The weather there has warm, sticky summers and winters that are usually mild. Las Piedras has a humid subtropical climate, written as "Cfa" on climate maps, using the Köppen Climate Classification system.

History

Las Piedras was founded in 1744 and was originally called "San Isidro".

On May 18, 1811, a leader named José Gervasio Artigas led forces to victory against Spain in the Battle of Las Piedras. This battle helped Uruguay become an independent country. In 1925, Las Piedras became an official city.

Health

Las Piedras has a public hospital called «Dr. Alfonso Espínola». This hospital is part of the Administración de los Servicios de Salud del Estado. There is also a private clinic that belongs to CRAMI. This clinic started in 2010.

Las Piedras had 71,258 people living there in 2011, according to the census. In 2010, local leaders thought the area around Las Piedras had about 79,412 people.

Another place is Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Parish Church in San Isidro. It is Roman Catholic and linked with the Pilgrims of the Eucharist. Lastly, St. Anthony of Padua Church in Pueblo Nuevo is also a Roman Catholic place of worship.
