List of Indonesian cities by population

Adapted from Wikipedia · Adventurer experience

A scenic view of Bandar Lampung city skyline as seen from Bukit Randu Hotel

This is a list of all the 95 cities with regency-level status in Indonesia, ranked by how many people live there. It does not include places that act like cities but are not officially called cities. Indonesia has 93 cities called kota, one special capital city named Nusantara, and one special area called the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. The numbers about how many people live in these cities come from a count done in 2020 and newer guesses from mid-2024, all from Statistics Indonesia.

Map of Indonesia

Jakarta is the biggest city and the only really large city, or megacity, in Indonesia. It has 10.70 million people. As a primate city, Jakarta is much bigger than any other city—about four times bigger than the second largest city, Surabaya. Jakarta and the Capital City of Nusantara are special because they are organized like provinces even though they are cities.

Other big cities in different parts of the country include Medan in Sumatra, Samarinda in Kalimantan, Denpasar in the Lesser Sunda Islands, Makassar in Sulawesi, Ambon in the Maluku Islands, and Jayapura in Western New Guinea.

Cities by population

This list shows the 95 cities in Indonesia, ordered by how many people live there. The cities are marked to show which ones are important for their areas. Some are written in bold because they are the main city of a province, and some are in italics because they are the biggest city in a province.
