List of Niuean monarchs

This is a list of monarchs who ruled the island of Niue.

Today, Niue is a self-governing territory that works with New Zealand. It recognizes King Charles III as the head of state. But in the past, Niue had its own special leaders called kings.

Long ago, before around 1700, Niue did not have one leader for the whole island. Different chiefs and family heads led their own groups. Around 1700, the idea of having a king began, maybe because of contact with nearby islands like Samoa or Tonga. From then on, leaders known as patu-iki ruled the island. The first of these kings was Puni-mata.

These kings were not chosen just because of their family. The people of Niue picked leaders from well-respected families. So Niue had a system where people helped choose their leader. This was a kind of democratic and elective monarchy, as Percy Smith described in 1903.

Imperial rule and free association

From 1900 to 1901, Niue was ruled by the United Kingdom. In 1901, the island became part of New Zealand. On 26 September 1907, New Zealand became a dominion, and from then on, the British monarch ruled Niue as the monarch of New Zealand. Elizabeth II was the first to be officially called Queen of New Zealand in 1952. Today, Niue is part of the Realm of New Zealand.
