List of canids

Canidae is a family of mammals that includes domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes, foxes, jackals, dingoes, and many other dog-like animals. These animals live all around the world, except for Antarctica. They come in many different sizes—from the large wolf to the tiny fennec fox. They usually have long muzzles, upright ears, and teeth good for cracking bones and slicing meat.

Most canids live together in family groups or small packs. They work together to take care of their young. Only the leading pair in a group usually has babies, and they raise their pups in a den underground. Canids talk to each other using smells and sounds.

One special canid is the domestic dog, which has been a friend to humans for a very long time. Today, dogs are one of the most common pets in the world. There are many different species of canids alive today. Scientists have also found many extinct canids, with the earliest ones living millions of years ago.

Conventions

The name of the scientist who first described the animal appears after its scientific name. If the name is in parentheses, it means the scientist originally placed the animal in a different group. We use symbols to show how safe an animal is, based on information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species. When we can, we show maps of where the animal lives; if not, we describe its home. These maps and descriptions come from the IUCN Red List, unless we say something else. If an animal listed with living animals died out after the year 1500 CE, we mark it with a dagger symbol: "†".

The family Canidae includes many types of dog-like animals. There are 37 living species and many subspecies. Some species have gone extinct.

All living canids belong to one subgroup called Caninae. They can be split into three bigger groups, called tribes. These tribes include animals like wolves, coyotes, foxes, and jackals.
