SafekipediaList of metropolitan areas in Spain

This is a list of the biggest metropolitan areas in Spain by how many people live there. It shows the people in important cities and the areas around them.
The numbers come from different studies. One study is called the "Functional Urban Areas" (FUAs) from the European Spatial Planning Observation Network in 2007. Another study is the "Larger Urban Zone" (LUZs) from the Urban Audit project in 2004, supported by the European Union. Not every city was in this study.
We also use work by Francisco Ruiz. He used data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadística from 2008. Sometimes he had numbers for bigger areas called "conurbations." The numbers are different in each report because the studies were done at different times and counted people in different ways. For example, ESPON groups Oviedo–Gijón–Avilés as one area, but Urban Audit counts Oviedo and Gijón separately. Also, Vilanova i la Geltrú is part of the Barcelona metropolitan area for ESPON, but Ruiz counts it as a separate area.
