Loyola Greyhounds

The Loyola Greyhounds, also called the Loyola Maryland Greyhounds, are the teams that play sports for Loyola University Maryland. The Greyhounds play many sports for both men and women. These sports include basketball, cross country, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, swimming & diving, and tennis. Men can also play golf, and women can play track and field and volleyball. The Greyhounds play in NCAA Division I and have been part of the Patriot League since July 1, 2013.

One special tradition for the team is their fight song called "Howl for the Hounds." This song was written by Andrew R. Grillo and Michael R. Sellitto and was first heard in November 2003. Fans and players use the song to show their support for the Greyhounds during games.

History

Conference affiliations

Loyola's sports teams moved up to NCAA Division I in 1981. They joined the ECAC-Metro Conference, which later became the Northeast Conference.

From 1989 to 2013, Loyola was part of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. But the men's and women's lacrosse teams played in other leagues. The men were in the ECAC Lacrosse League, and the women were in the Big East Conference. In 2012, Loyola announced they would join the Patriot League. This change happened in 2013.

Basketball

The Loyola men's basketball team has been playing since 1908. They have been in the NCAA tournament two times. They play their home games in Reitz Arena.

Lacrosse

The men's lacrosse team began in 1938 and has won many games. They won their first big championship in 2012. The women's lacrosse team also has many wins and important rivalries with other teams.

Men's soccer

The men's soccer team is one of the best at Loyola. Since 1965, they have only had a few seasons where they didn’t win more games than they lost. They have been in the NCAA Division I National Tournament many times.

Golf

The men's golf team has won 22 conference titles over the years in different conferences.

Rugby

The Loyola University Rugby Football Club is the men's rugby team. Founded in 1976, it is the oldest and most active club sport at the school. The team has won many titles and rankings, and they have played teams in Ireland. They play on Lugano Field, named after Sean Lugano, a player who sadly passed away.

Media

In autumn 2011, Loyola began a free service called Hounds Unleashed to show its live sports online. When the university joined a new sports group, this service became part of the Patriot League Network. Later, on September 16, 2020, the network joined ESPN+.

Former teams

Loyola University Maryland once had a football team. It stopped in 1933. They also had a wrestling team. It ended in 1987.
