The Marsi were an Italic people who lived in ancient Italy. Their main town was Marruvium, near a big lake called Lake Fucinus. This lake was later drained when the Roman leader Claudius was in charge.
Today, the place where they lived is known as Marsica.
They spoke a language called Marsian. We know about this language from a few old writings that were found. The Marsi were one of many groups that helped shape the early history of Italy before the Roman Empire became powerful. Their story shows us the different cultures that once lived in the area.
Mythological history
According to the writer Pliny the Elder, the Marsi people were said to come from Telegonus. Telegonus was the son of Odysseus and Circe. Pliny thought that the Marsi and another group called the Psylli from Ancient Libya learned from Circe to be safe from viper venom. This meant they could not be hurt by snakes and could even make snakes fall asleep.
History
The Marsi were an ancient group of people who lived in Italy. They were first known as part of a group with the Vestini, Paeligni, and Marrucini. Later, they joined the Samnites in 308 BC and became friends with Rome in 304 BC. Even after a short rebellion, they were allowed back into Rome's group and stayed loyal until a big war called the Social War.
During this time, Latin-speaking communities like Alba Fucens and Carsioli were set up nearby. The Marsi fought in the Social War from 91 to 87 BC, often called the Marsic War because of their important role. Though they lost many battles, the war ended with all allies gaining equal rights. Their leader, Q. Pompaedius Silo, put "Italia" on their coins, showing their wish to be treated the same as others.
Religion
The Marsi people had a special place of worship called the sanctuary of Lucus Angitiae. It was their main temple and forest for the goddess Angitia, near a large lake called Fucinus. Many people loved Angitia as a goddess who could help people get better, especially if bitten by snakes. They believed she could use magic charms and special plants to heal them, and this tradition lasted a long time. The Romans thought the Marsi land was a place where magic happened.
