A mouse (pl. mice) is a small rodent. Mice have a pointed snout, small rounded ears, a scaly tail, and can have lots of babies. The most well-known mouse is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). Some people keep mice as pets. In some areas, certain kinds of field mice are common. Mice sometimes go into homes looking for food and shelter.

Mice are usually smaller than rats. If you find a small muroid rodent, it is often called a mouse. If it is larger, it is called a rat. But these words are not exact science. Most mice are in the group called Mus, but sometimes other animals are called mice too, like the deer mouse (Peromyscus).

House mouse (Mus musculus)

Domestic mice sold as pets can be different sizes from wild house mice. This is because of breeding and different living conditions. The most famous type of mouse is the white lab mouse. These mice have similar traits, which helps scientists use them in research.

Cats, wild dogs, foxes, birds of prey, snakes, some big lizards, and certain arthropods sometimes catch and eat mice. Even so, mice are still very common. Mice can live in many different places, which helps them survive very well. The mouse is one of the most successful mammalian groups on Earth today.

Types of animals known as mice

Mice are small animals that belong to a group called murines, which also includes common rats. They are part of a larger family called murids, along with gerbils and other similar animals.

There are many different kinds of mice found in nature. Some live in forests, while others live in fields or even homes. They are part of the order Rodentia, which includes many other rodents. Some examples of mice include the Brush mouse, Florida mouse, Golden mouse, and the Wood mouse. Each type of mouse has its own special features and habitats.

Emotions

Scientists found that mice can show different feelings, like humans. They used special computer programs to see if mice looked happy, uncomfortable, sick, hurt, or scared. This helps us learn more about how animals feel.

Diet

Mice naturally eat fruits and grains, but they can eat many kinds of food scraps when they live near people. When kept as pets, mice are usually given special food pellets that give them all the nutrients they need, along with vegetables.

Mice do not especially like cheese. Instead, they prefer sweet foods and foods with lots of calories. They might eat cheese only if there is nothing else available.

Mice are often used in laboratory research because they are similar to humans in many ways. Scientists study mice to learn about biology and health. They are easy to care for and reproduce quickly.

Many people also keep mice as pets. They can be playful and enjoy being handled. Pet mice need a safe cage, special food, and clean bedding to stay healthy. Mice are also used as food for small pets like snakes, lizards, and birds.
