Per H. Enflo, born on 20 May 1944, is a Swedish mathematician known for his important work in functional analysis. He solved several big problems in this field that had been unanswered for many years. These included the basis problem, the approximation problem, and the invariant subspace problem for Banach spaces.

By solving these problems, Enflo created new methods that helped other researchers in functional analysis and operator theory. His work has also been useful in other areas of mathematics, like number theory, and in computer science, especially in computer algebra and approximation algorithms.

Enflo works at Kent State University as a University Professor. He has also worked at places like the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, École Polytechnique in Paris, and The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In addition to his work in mathematics, Enflo is also a concert pianist.

Enflo's contributions to functional analysis and operator theory

In 1937, Polish mathematician Stanisław Mazur promised a "live goose" as the prize for solving problem 153 in the Scottish Book. In 1972, Mazur presented the goose to Per Enflo.

Functional analysis is a part of mathematics that studies spaces and the actions that work on them. It looks at how functions can be changed and solved, using tools like the Fourier transform. A key part of functional analysis involves Banach spaces, which are special spaces important in areas like quantum mechanics and probability.

Enflo made big advances by solving three hard problems in functional analysis. His work introduced new ways to solve problems that helped many other researchers. His methods also helped computer science by making some problems easier to solve.

Mathematical biology: Population dynamics

In applied mathematics, Per Enflo has written about mathematical biology, especially how groups of living things change over time. This is called population dynamics.

A concert pianist, Per Enflo debuted at the Stockholm Concert Hall in 1963.

Enflo also studied population genetics and early human history, known as paleoanthropology. Today, all people are part of one group called Homo sapiens sapiens. But scientists think that earlier human-like species lived long ago. One early species, Homo habilis, lived in East Africa more than two million years ago. Another, Homo erectus, spread across much of the Old World.

Enflo worked with other scientists to explain old bones and DNA from early humans. They looked at how different groups of humans might have mixed or replaced each other. Enflo also studied how small water creatures called zebra mussels change in Lake Erie.

Piano

Per Enflo is also a concert pianist.

He was very good at music and math when he was young. He won a big piano competition in Sweden when he was 11 years old in 1956, and he won it again in 1961. At age 12, he played with a famous orchestra in Sweden. He gave his first big concert in Stockholm in 1963. Some of his teachers were very famous musicians.

In 1999, Enflo took part in a piano competition for experienced players organized by the Van Cliburn Foundation. He often performs in places like Kent and Columbus, Ohio, where he plays music by Mozart. His concerts have been broadcast on a radio station supported by Ohio State University.
